Southern Water Company Underground Water Storage Facility

Scope of work: Bulk excavation and earthworks; reinforced concrete underground tank construction; specialist waterproofing and joint sealing; pipework installation and connections to existing supply infrastructure; access structures, covers, and safety features; backfilling and surface reinstatement; pressure testing and commissioning.

Southern Water Company Limited engaged JMC and ATQC to construct a new 6,000m³ underground water storage reservoir at the Tema Free Zones Enclave — effectively doubling the zone’s total storage capacity to meet the growing industrial water demand of one of Ghana’s most strategically important economic corridors.

The project was technically demanding. Working below grade, our teams delivered a large-scale reinforced concrete structure with specialist waterproofing systems, pressure-tested to ensure zero leakage and long-term reliability. The reservoir was designed to complement the free zones existing 6,000m³ above-ground facility, creating a resilient, dual-system supply infrastructure for the enclave’s industrial community.

Completed on programme, this project stands as one of the most significant utility infrastructure milestones in the Tema Free Zones — ensuring a dependable water supply for the industries that anchor Ghana’s industrial growth.
